General Description: The Center for Immunization Research is seeking a Nurse Practitioner specializing in Pediatrics for the Respiratory Virus Vaccine team. The nurse practitioner will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Research Nurse Manager, and Research Coordinators to implement outpatient and possibly inpatient respiratory virus vaccines in pediatric human subjects according to good clinical practice guidelines. Reviews medical histories and performs comprehensive screening physical examinations to determine eligibility of research subjects enrolled in clinical trials and, in collaboration with the Principal Investigator, reviews and interprets laboratory studies and evaluates initial and ongoing eligibility of volunteers enrolled in the clinical trial. Refers subjects for additional medical care as appropriate. In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, assesses adverse events occurring during the clinical trial for causality and severity. Responsible for 24 hour protocol accountability. Assists Principal Investigator in the preparation of safety reports to the Data and Safety Monitoring Board, to the Sponsor, to the Institutional Review Board, and to any other appropriate regulatory agency. Responsible for administration of study material, surveillance, collection of specimens, data collection including but not limited to study documentation, maintenance of volunteer medical and research records, maintenance of written study related logs, shipping lists, drug accountability. Contributes to development of semi-annual and annual reports to the Sponsor. Provides assistance to the PI with protocol submissions and communications to all appropriate Institutional Review Boards and other regulatory authorities. Ensures compliance with protocol requirements. May develop protocol documents including consent forms, source document, CRFs and data collections tools, and monitors implementation compliance. Ensures that all clinical trial related activity is performed in compliance within GCP, ICH, and IRB guidelines. Interacts with the Sponsor with regard to monitoring visits. May be responsible for overall planning, implementation and evaluation of pediatric research studies in the following areas: protocol development, creation/selection of protocol data collection documents, site logistics including resource needs, orientation of study staff to protocol, adherence by staff to protocol, guide study staff in the day to day operations of the study, oversight of data collection. May be responsible for recruiting, screening, educating, obtaining informed consent. Requires working knowledge of Microsoft office suite. Will require use of Microsoft office sharepoint, training will be provided. Will require data entry into NIH database (CRIMSON), training will be provided. Works independently; Able to work as a team member or lead a study team as necessary. Has accountability for project implementation. Delegates responsibilities appropriately. Clear, concise, professional oral and written communication required. Able to advise, consult, negotiate, and influence internal and external contacts such as faculty, administrators, students, associations, vendors/contractors, consultants, federal agencies, sponsored funding agencies, staff, job applicants, journalists, media personalities, and editors. Able to communicate with pediatric medical care providers, parents, and children. 
 
Qualifications: Master’s degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master’s degree. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hands or arms, for example, using a keyboard – Reaching by extending hands or arms in any direction. Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 20 lbs or less. Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 20 lbs or less. Ability to move about. Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time. Ability to drive personal automobile for extended periods of time to off-site locations. Requires own reliable transportation to travel between study sites. Candidates who desire a slightly reduced work schedule in order to maintain clinical care hours may be considered. 
Preferred Qualifications: Certification in clinical research is preferred or to be attained within 2 years of entering position. Three years of experience working in pediatric clinical care strongly preferred. Previous clinical research experience preferred. 
NOTE: The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact generally require immunization against mumps, rubella, measles, chicken pox and hepatitis B. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office. Please be aware that should you require vaccination for chicken pox, the vaccine is administered in two doses given six weeks apart. Johns Hopkins University policy is that individuals will be placed off work without pay between the two doses.
