Requirements     Provides direct support to clinical research being conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Position supports the Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases (LCID) located at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Works with a multidisciplinary clinical team providing comprehensive health care to patients in a research environment to infectious disease patients populations in an outpatient clinic. Provides medical evaluation for subjects in clinical trials in collaboration with the Medical Director and other members of the research team. Screens and monitors medical status of subjects participating in research protocols. Provides assessments of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities. Provides documentation and monitoring and grading of side effects related to a variety of study interventions including drugs and psychological behaviors. Obtains medical histories and performs physical examinations. Orders the appropriate research related testing/treatment and interprets results obtained from diagnostic tests and laboratory studies. Provides patient and staff education. Participates in clinical rounds and in meetings/conferences relating to study protocols and research. Completes in-depth documentation through written progress notes, dictation summaries, and communication with referring physicians. Maintains clinical competence in an area of specialty practice by integrating the art and science of both nursing and medicine into practice. Ensures compliance with applicable licensure/certification requirements, applicable healthcare standards, governmental laws and regulations as well as policies, procedures and philosophy in nature.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university. Registered Nurse license and Family Nurse Practitioner certification (national and state). Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to education requirements, a minimum of three (3) years relevant nursing experience. Ability to maintain clinical competence by integrating the art and science of both nursing and medical into practice. Must be able to work and communicate effectively as a team member and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Medical Director and various levels of medical staff. Must have the ability to assess acute and non-acute medical problems. Must have a professional mastery of clinical nursing knowledge to patient assessment and medical care, as well as knowledge of pharmacology. Responsible for developing patient rapport and providing emotional support in helping patients cope with stress associated with illnesses, including cancer. Demonstrate knowledge of standards, policies/procedures and treatment by integration of that knowledge into the delivery of care. Must be willing to maintain and enhance clinical practice skills by attending/participating in and conducting staff development and continuing education programs. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
DESIRED SKILLS: Prior nursing experience with clinical trials and/or the study of infectious diseases, and experience in an outpatient setting.
