The
Licensed Practical Nurse functions as a member of the nursing team under the direction of a
Registered Nurse. S/he is responsible and accountable for providing direct and indirect patient care in pediatrics, adult medicine and other areas of the health center as assigned, including telephone triage, appointment scheduling, and prescription refills. The
Licensed Practical Nurse is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager/Designee.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
A. Patient Care
1. Performs nursing treatments and procedures which s/he has demonstrated competency.
2. Prepares pediatric and adult patients for provider appointments by taking vital signs, weight, height, and vision screening. Performs EKGs and suture removals. Assists providers during procedures, and chaperones male providers during GYN exams.
3. Performs Pediatric and Adult Medicine telephone triage under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
4. Administers medications to pediatric and adult patients, as ordered by the medical provider.
5. Under the guidance of the
Registered Nurse, the LPN provides basic health maintenance teaching to the patient and family, including temperature taking, family planning, HIV, immunization, and medication use.
6. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, provides prescription refill support in Adult Medicine and Pediatrics.
7. Documents according to the documentation standard of the health center and Nursing Department. Updates the health maintenance sheets as appropriate.
8. Participates in health center outreach activities and educational programs.
9. Participates in health center team meetings.
10. Other health center duties as needed.
Requirements
Qualifications
1. Graduate of an approved school of practical nursing.
2. Current license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
3. Experience in Pediatric and Adult Medicine preferred.
4. Telephone triage experience preferred.
5. Bilingual in Spanish and English, required.
